Sixteen (an MMMR record) digital racers descended on the new Fireside Raceway in Hanover MD. for the second of three preliminary Carrera stock car races leading to a four- race series beginning in March. This was the first race at Fireside and everyone was amazed and challenged by this 121 ft. circuit with a 21 ft. Straight. Tom, taking advantage of much track development practice won by four laps over Cookie, who barnstormed his way from the B Main into second by sections from Bo. As always this was a close digital race with second, fourth, and sixth decided by sections. The highlight of the race was Reggie’s fight for sixth with Paris and Ron. His car lost both right side body screws so the Plymouth was flapping on left handers with the poor little driver inside trying to hold it in place! Talk about body float……Gizmo Fridovich made a welcome appearance and won the rookie award over an improving Stormin’ Norman. Chuck Wagon Bill AKA Chef Bill “R” Dee provided excellent eats. Despite several improvements to be made, everyone is excited about the Feb. Prelim on the 24th.

This race was a shambles. Continuing the DROT program, this race was run at 13 volts rather than the standard of 12.5 volts. The grid was reversed and stretched out over a third of a lap. The spaced-out grid was interesting as there was little chance of a massive crash at the first turn. The increased voltage was not a challenge to staying in the slot and the vettes were fast and fun. The unintended consequence was the faster cars were leaping over the lap counter. This was discovered after the B main. After much debate it was decided to let the results stay unchanged. Bo, taking this knowledge in hand, drove fast and consistent but slow on the lap counter in the A main to win overall. Several drivers had legitimate claims on the win but Bo had the most laps. All drivers were good sports about this situation and the offending lap counter will be moved for the next race.

Unfortunately this race was as plagued with correct lap counting issues as the Corvette race was last month. This time cars were de-slotting on the jump and missing the counter altogether. The race was a fight between Tom, Mike, and Reggie but it was difficult to tell what was happening as drivers (particularly Tom) were repeatedly missing laps. It had to be sorted out post-race with a software review. Nobody was happy and the counter will be moved yet again to the other side of the scalextric loop.

This race, run at 13.5 volts, was a superb display of driving by Bo and David. Bo in the A main and David in the B main were in another zip code from all other drivers. Bo carried first by less than a full lap. Both drivers ran a sub 15 sec. average lap for the ten-minute race meaning very few de-slots. Kevin is improving race by race and earned his first podium with a fine drive to third. Bo put up an amazing 13.922 lap time in Corvette practice to lower the lap record to under 14 sec. and worries that the Vettes would fly over the counter at 13.5 V. were unfounded. Most drivers enjoyed the increased power.
