Eleven intrepid racers braved torrential downpours to participate in MMMR’s first race held on the Hanover Digital Speedway Sept. 23, 2023. All agreed, it was worth the effort.
Practice and qualifying revealed a cold slow track with only Tom and Craig hardly breaking the 10 second mark and no one getting close to Reggie’s lap record of 9.4. MMMR’s procedure models real IMSA races, requiring a driver to set a time amidst ghost cars and other racers. Finding a clear lap and then producing a quick time is challenging. Tom timed in at 9.787 with Craig earning the Fast Time Prize (Bianchi Tire Cleaner) with a 9.964.
5 min. Sprint Qualifying races were next with drivers being equally distributed by lap time between heats. Bo won the first heat and “Turbo” won heat two to lead Craig, Tom, Mike and P.J. into the A Main.
The B Main ran first, giving the top qualifiers the best track surface, and Reggie dominated the race to put up 147 laps which was enough to place 4th overall. The battle for the Rookie awards (plaque and cars) was a fierce one between Kevin, Tim, and Leo. Kevin was top rookie with Leo edging Tim after Tim’s Ferrari had guide flag failure.
The A main evoked H.O. racing from the 90s with long time rivals Craig and Tom racing for the lead throughout the 30 min. race. Marshaling was rough on this race but the incidents seemed to equal out. Craig’s car was marshaled off the track at pit entrance several times and Tom’s was lost under the banking for a lap or two but the they were never more than 3 or 4 laps apart. Craig kept under control whereas Tom flubbed the final pit stop to fall to 3rd behind Bo, who (as always) drove a steady race to claim 2nd spot on the podium.
New for this race was a rule disallowing the pushing of a car through the pits during pit stops by another car (thereby wrecking a driver’s pit stop) and imposing a stiff 5 lap penalty to the offending driver. This requires a “pit marshal” to keep order. Craig set a superlative example of pit marshaling to demonstrate the effectiveness of this new procedure and nobody was penalized.
Chef “Bill R Dee” provided a vast array of food (burgers, dogs, steak, shrimp, mac and cheese, popcorn etc.) to keep everybody well fed.

10 Minute Carrera Stock Car Race
Nine racers continued to develop this proposed class of digital Carrera stock cars. These cars, now with body float, lowered and weighted are becoming fun to race. With larger tires than Carrera G.T. cars they are fast. Tom, as a development driver jumped into a 3 lap advantage which he held to the finish. Reggie, who always races well in D.R.O.T. wrested the plaque and digital car prize a lap ahead of Bo and Craig who were sections apart. A typical close fought digital race. M.M.M.R. encourages digital racers to prepare one of these cars for a possible series starting in Jan. 2024.

Goodloe Model Motorsports Park Inaugural Race Meet
Maryland Model Motor Racing held its second event at the newly constructed Goodloe Model Motorsports Park. The fifteen driver field included four racers competing for the
top rookie spot. Most racers were intimidated by the demanding features of this new track including blind spots, high speed braking into tight 180 degree hairpins, and setting up their cars for Carrera and Scalextric turns. The partially blind Hard Rock turn in the forested Harrington Heights section was particularly difficult. It was not long however before drivers like Bo and Craig were circulating the 93 foot track in the low 14 seconds. The fastest laps were posted by track developers Tom and Dave @ 13.8 sec.
Five minute Qualifying races were run to determine driver placement for the 30 minute main races. Tom and Craig led the way with a stand out performance by Tim placing
third. The 30 min. Grand Prix was dominated by Dave, who set the pace in the B main, Bo, Craig and Tom, who all took their turn at the front of the A main. Most drivers
managed the pit stop program without losing too much time. In the last half of the race Craig car's guide flag fell off resulting in his eventual retirement. This left Tom holding a three lap lead over the skirmishing Tim and Bo. Tom's car then started slowing up until it was running almost flat out. Bo was closing and the race ended with Tom winning by less than a lap over Bo's flying Corvette. Bo just pipped Dave by sections. Craig was unlucky
as he would have certainly taken the race had he not run into trouble. None of the leaders ran at their heat race pace so more can be gained in future races. Sly and quiet
Reggie snuck into fourth from the B main over Tim's run in the A. Tim's fifth place earned him the Top Rookie Award. As with most digital races, the races were hard fought between for all the places.

Thirteen drivers participated in this, the penultimate stock Car development race, with three mains. Reggie, continued his excellent driving to win another D.R.O.T. race, demonstrating that he will be a force to contend with in the proposed Classic N.A.S.C.A.R.(Not Another Stock Car Race!)series next year. He finished a lap ahead of the scrabbling Bo and Tom. Mike came from the B main to run fourth and Craig from the C main finished fifth. Lap times were only a second off the G.T.\D.T.M. cars. These Stockers are fun to drive and produce close (sections!) and tight (fractions of inches!) racing. “Rubbing is racing” in the great stock car tradition.
