Goodloe Fall Classic

This was the second race meeting at the Goodloe Model Motorsports Park and the track continues to be a tough nut to crack. The combo Scalextric and Carrera sections are a challenge to driving and set up skills alike and in addition there are several blind spots that require rhythm and practice. Some drivers used step stools to no real gain. Despite this, the race was close and saw three different drivers contest the lead to the end. Nobody has yet mastered the pit stop program without losing time. Most drivers who raced in the Goodloe Inaugural improved their scores in the Fall Classic based on predictions from the Qualifying races.  Tom won the event by two laps over Craig with Dave a further lap back. All three took turns at the front. Bo, Mike and Ron (from the B main) came next in a battle for fourth that was decided by sections. Cookee and Reg seventh and eighth were on the same lap. Randy was just getting to grips with the circuit when his guide flag fell off dropping him down the order.  The next race at G.M.M.P. will be a Carrera Classic NASCAR race in March or April.

Goodloe Fall Classic DROT Race

This, the final M.M.M.R. Carrera Classic NASCAR class development race, might be the closest digital race on record anywhere. This was a 10 min. war. In battle for the win was perpetual front runner Reggie who won the B main, past D.R.O.T. winner Craig and national driver Ron making a welcome appearance. Craig led most of the event over Ron but as he came to grips with his car (no driver gets practice with their particular car) Ron put in an almost flawless drive to overhaul the multiple Capital Racing League champion to win by a lap and a half. Craig fell sections short of Reggie’s B main score to finish third. Now, the closest race ever. Seriously, folks, this was an absolute titanic struggle for fourth across two mains. Kevin showed why he is the most improved driver over the past few races by winning what was thought to be a close B main with the other drivers pushing him hard. Then the A main saw Dave in third but behind Kevin. Well to understand the rest of the story, please refer to the stats. Six drivers finished on the same lap with another off by a smidge. Every driver was just a few sections or one de-slot less away from gaining another position. Kevin’s run held up for fourth but just, congratulations to a fine drive. Ghost cars were painted like past NASCAR greats. Notably Dale “Ghost” Earnhardt continued his intimidating ways, putting Reggie off the Per-4-Mance bridge on to the track below. This race bodes well for the up coming Classic N.A.S.C.A.R. series and shows how well the Digital Racing of Tomorrow class is working. For the future, Slot It Group C cars will be chipped and developed.

December Preliminary

Drivers from Maryland, District of Columbia, Virginia, and for the first time New Jersey comprised the fifteen car field of M.M.M.R. Carrera Classic NASCAR 1\32nd scale digital machines. Kudos to Aiden Day the first junior driver (15) to run an M.M.M.R. race. Until he ran into a loose windshield in his car, he was doing well. This was the first race for these cars which were developed in the Digital Racing of Tomorrow class and everyone enjoyed the challenge of driving these honkers and they are only around a second a lap off the G.T.\D.T.M. cars. The racing was intense.

At the start Paris jumped into a slim lead over Tom and Dave. As there was little information about position it was put your head down and drive for the racers. Paris and Tom both mismanaged the fuel stop program while Dave had the best pit stop sequence ever, only staying a few seconds longer at the last stop. Paris stopped when he mistook the lap count for fuel consumption. This put Tom into the lead and Dave into second on the same lap. Paris just pipped Bo (from the B) for third. These four drivers were all within two laps of each other. Paris was a true sportsman, several times marshaling while driving (another digital plus) even putting Tom’s car back into the slot during the final stages of their battle for the lead. We hope he continues to attend M.M.M.R. events. Cookee put in a fine marshaling job standing over the hole at the inner hairpin fetching cars out handily.

Brian put in a fine drive to fifth, earning the top rookie award. Steady Reggie ran sixth while Craig (with no practice) did well to finish seventh. All were on the same lap. Digital racing is always close racing.

The new year promises excellent racing, a stock car series and possibly three new tracks coming on line. HAPPY HOLIDAYS.

Corvette Challenge Cup race #1

Since the new DROT cars (Slot It Group C) are not yet prepared in sufficient quantity MMMR has substituted three races to be run as the Corvette Challenge Cup. It was terrifying to see thirteen Carrera Corvettes lined up to race. The A main had four of it’s five corvettes painted yellow resulting the cars decorated with bright tape making it appear to be an analog segment. The race was a fun and rambunctious race. The BOHICA boys (Tom and Dave) again ran one-two but Craig kept it close, finishing on the same lap as Dave to run third. Tom came close to a perfect race, only de-slotting once due to a defective pit gate. Most of the finishing order was very close. It must be said that the BOHICA drivers are a riot to observe. As Tom closed on Dave to put him a second lap down the conversation went like this: D. “Don’t wreck me Tom” T. “I won’t”. After a lap of sitting on Dave’s tail-T. “Well, are you going to let me by?” No comment from Dave (both understand the rule that the overtaking driver must make the pass clean) so Tom changes to the outer, marginally slower lane. After another lap Tom pulls along side of Dave, both cars catch air and brake impossibly late for the hairpin. Tom, with the larger radii just makes it while Dave’s car rolls into the fence. This is why digital racing is such a blast, the passes are never easy and so much more rewarding than analog dicing.
